Business Big Shot with Subby Hubby

Kate Swann made history yesterday by becoming the first woman to sit on the board of British Land, the FTSE 100 property company. The non-executive director, who is chief executive at WH Smith, the high street retail chain, started her career in 1986 as a graduate trainee with Tesco. She had completed a degree in business management at Bradford University.

Ms Swann’s career reads like a Who’s Who of retail and consumer brands. The 41-year-old marketing expert worked for Coca-Cola and Currys, the electricals retailer, before joining Homebase. In 2003 she was poached from Argos, where she was managing director, to take on the challenge of running WH Smith.

The mother-of-two, whose husband Michael quit working at their local Sainsbury’s store to look after their children, has also been tipped as a candidate for the chief executive’s position at the supermarkets group Wm Morrison. Story from www.timesonline.co.uk
